Repair or Replace?

A Quick Guide for Home Users

We’ve all had it happen. Your laptop starts taking forever to load, your desktop won’t turn on, or a device just isn’t running like it used to. In that moment, the big question hits: Should I try to get it fixed, or is it time to replace it entirely?

It’s not always a simple answer—but here’s a practical guide to help you decide what’s best for your needs and your wallet.

When Repair (or Upgrade) Makes Sense

If your device is still under 3 to 5 years old and has been generally reliable, repairing it is often the most cost-effective option. Common issues like a dying battery, faulty charging port, or corrupted software can usually be fixed at a reasonable price—and can restore your device to smooth working order.

But repairs aren’t the only option. In many cases, an upgrade can breathe new life into your system. Desktops—and even some laptops—can be significantly improved with a larger solid-state drive (SSD), more RAM, or even a better CPU. These upgrades can dramatically improve performance for a fraction of the cost of a new machine.

This is especially worthwhile if you’re happy with your current setup or don’t want to deal with the hassle of transferring data and reinstalling programs. A quick diagnostic can usually determine if your machine is a good candidate for upgrading, and the savings can be substantial.

When It’s Time to Replace

That said, sometimes it’s just not worth patching things up. If the cost to repair is more than half the price of a comparable new device, replacement starts to make more sense. The same goes if your computer is more than 5–7 years old and struggles to run newer software or receive security updates.

Another sign it might be time to move on? Frequent issues. If you’re constantly dealing with crashes, freezing, or strange behaviour, you could be sinking time and money into a system that’s near the end of its life.

If your tech needs have also changed—maybe you're working from home more, doing video editing, or need more speed and storage—then investing in a modern machine that’s built for your workflow could save you a lot of frustration in the long run.
